Avondale, Arizona

Avondale is a medium sized city located adjacent to Phoenix in Maricopa County. The city is composed of 19 neighborhoods and is the 13th largest community in the state of Arizona. It has a mixed workforce of both white and blue collar positions, a hot desert climate and is a part of Phoenix Metropolitan area. It is an ethnically diverse community where over 15% of the residents were born outside of the United States. It is a city of subdivisions and shopping malls that rests at the base of the Estrella Mountains and is home to the Phoenix International Raceway.

Little is recorded about the area prior to 1850, but in 1851, Monument Hill was built by the U.S. Boundary Commission during a reconnaissance survey of the United States/Mexico border. In 1865, Monument Hill was chosen as the starting point for surveys of the state of Arizona. In its early days the main crops in the area were alfalfa and cotton and for many years it remained a farming community. Avondale was incorporated in 1946 and has experience it’s most rapid growth since approximately 1980. In 1984, the monument at Monument Hill was refurbished and in 2002 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The city spans 45.1 square miles of almost exclusively land area. In 2010, the population had reached 76,238 residents, the population density was 1,735.17 square miles and the per capita income was $20,635. By 2013, the population was 78,882 and the per capita income was $19,380. In the same year, the estimated median house or condo value was $139,900, the mean housing price on all housing units was $242,284 and the median gross rent was $1,040. The population estimate for 2014 was 79,646 and the current estimated median household income is $55,506.

The city spans into two zip code areas, 85323 and 85392. It features approximately ten parks, among these parks you will find Festival Fields, Las Ligas, Donnie Hale Park, Mountain View Park and others. The city has many sites of interest like Monument Gallery, the historic Avondale Art District, the Randall McDaniel Sports Complex and Goodyear Farms Historic Cemetery. It is also home to the Base&Meridian Wildlife Area that spans 198 acres. The Tres Rios Nature Festival is an annual event held at the wildlife area to celebrate the history, landscape, wildlife and plant life of the area.

The city is now predominantly a bedroom community for the Greater Phoenix Area. Public education in Avondale is provided by three school districts, Avondale Elementary District, Littleton Elementary School District and Agua Fria Union High School Fria Union High School Fria Union High School District. It has been home to several notable residents including MLB player Shawn Gilbert, former NFL player and hall of fame inductee Randall McDaniel and Craig Mabbit vocalist of Escape the Fate and many others.
