Tolleson is a small town of about 6,600 located in Maricopa County. It’s a mere 13 miles west of Phoenix. The town has a total area of 5.6 square miles, all of it land.

Tolleson was founded in 1912 by Walter and Alethea Tolleson. They purchased a 160-acre ranch at the intersection of 91st Avnue and Van Buren Street for $16,000 in 1910. It was later incorporated in 1929. Though the town suffered economically during the Great Depression, it underwent a dramatic recovery through agriculture, and was known as the “Vegetable Center of the World” by the 1950s. The ’70s and ’80s were marked by residential and industrial innovation, paving the way for Tolleson to be the economically successful town it is today. Though in very close proximity to rapidly growing cities such as Phoenix, Glendale, Peoria, and Goodyear, Tolleson is committed to its fundamental values. The city’s vision statement says that it will “retain the foundation of our family-oriented, friendly, small town atmosphere. We will support a positive, diverse growth environment that maintains and enriches the quality of life for everyone.”

Of the 6,600 people who call Tolleson home, about 86% are white. About 82% are of hispanic ethnicity, which indicates that about 18% of the population is non-hispanic. Other minorities make up less than 10% of the population.
