Peoria is a major suburb of Phoenix with parts in both Maricopa County and Yavapai County, AZ. Most of the suburb is located in Maricopa County. Its known history dates back to the 1800s. Pioneers, organized by John “Jack” Swilling, dug the first modern irrigation ditch in the Salt River Valley in 1868. This helped the area to thrive agriculturally. By 1872, a mere four years later, about 8,000 acres of land had been cultivated alone the Salt River. Between 1891 and 1895, a railroad stop was established in Peoria, aiding in its growth. In 1900, the Presbyterian Church was constructed, and is now the oldest Presbyterian church still in use in all of Arizona. The city was founded in 0000, and gets its name from the settlers who had traveled from Peoria, Illinois to farm in Arizona in the 1800s. Peoria was incorporated in 1954. It is now the ninth largest city in Arizona.
