Glendale is a large city spanning 18 zip codes 85301-85318. It has 55 neighborhoods and is the fifth largest community in the state of Arizona. Glendale is located nine miles from downtown Phoenix and has a mixed workforce where neither white-collar nor blue collar work is dominant. Glendale is an upper middle-class city when compared to state and federal economic statistics. The city is very ethnically diverse and over 16% of residents were born outside the borders of the United States. English is the first language in the city with Spanish being the second most common. Glendale is home to the Catlin Court Historic District as well as being the self-proclaimed, “Arizona Antique Capital.” This title is supported by the writings of USA Today and Sunset Magazine.
Up until the late 1800s the area that would one day be Greendale was all desert. In 1885, William John Murphy completed a 40 mile long canal, the Arizona Canal. The canal brought much needed water to the area. William H. Bartlett established the Shuro Ranchin1886. The ranch became a fruit farm that spanned 640 acres. In 1892, the Glendale Temperance Colony was founded and the W.J. Murphy’s New England Land Company surveyed and platted the communities first residential area. This was considered Glendale’s birth date. In 1895, both the first school and the first library were established in the growing community and the Santa Fe Railroad arrived in the community. In 1906, a large beet sugar factory opened offering many jobs. The town incorporated as a town in 1910 and elected its first mayor. Since that time growth has continued and in 2007 it hosted the Fiesta Bowl and in 2008 it hosted the Super Bowl.
The city spans 55.8 square miles of land area. In 2010, the population was 226,721, the population density was 4,063.1 inhabitants per square mile and the per capita income was $22,071. By 2013, the population was 234,632, the estimated median household income was $41,037 and the estimated per capita income was $20,326. In the same year, the estimated median house or condo value in Greendale was $142,600, the mean housing price on all units was $167,208 and the median gross rent was $842.
Public education in the city of Glendale is provided by several school districts including, but not limited to Deer Valley Unified School District, Tolleson Union High School District, Peoria Unified School District and more.
