Gilbert, Arizona is a semi-large town in Maricopa County that spans into four zip codes, 85233, 85234, 85295 and 85298. The town has 44 neighborhoods and is the 7th largest community in the state of Arizona. Gilbert is part of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. It is a predominantly white-collar community with nearly 87% of the workforce employed in white-collar positions. There are plans in place for the development of bus and rail service in the town, though for now there is no public transportation. The community as good schools, high rates of homeowner occupancy and low crime rates. It is a semi-ethnically diverse town where English is the first language and Spanish is the second.
William “Bobby” Gilbert is credited with giving the town its start when he contributed land to the Arizona Eastern Railway in 1902. The land enabled the company to build a line from Phoenix to Florence. The first store, Ayer’s Grocery opened in 1910 and the first post office in the community opened in the store in 1912. There was a population influx in the community in 1912 when Mormons from Mexico came and settled as they fled the actions of Pancho Villa. Gilbert is the most populated of incorporated towns in the United States. the population has risen from 5,717 in 1980 to 208,453 in 2010. This rapid growth is due in part to a shift in the area from an agriculture based economy to a thriving suburban center. It is also due to expansion through annexation.
The town spans 76 square miles and is almost exclusively all land area. In 2010, the population was 208,453, the population density was 2,862.12 inhabitants per square mile and the per capita income was $31,673. By 2013, the population was 229,972, the estimated median household income was $81,589 and the estimated per capita income is $31,726. Also, in 2013 the estimated median house or condo value was $239,400, the mean housing price on all units was $242,284 and the median gross rent was $1,242. The latest population estimate reported the population in 2014 was 239,277.

Among these districts are the Gilbert Public School District, Higley Unified School District, the Lead Charter School District and others. Local schools both public and private include schools like Gilbert Elementary, Gilbert Junior High, Greenfield Junior High, Highland High and others. Gilbert has two sister cities Newtownabbey, North Ireland and Leshan, Sichuan, China.
