The town of Fountain Hills, Arizona is a medium sized town in Maricopa County, Arizona. The town has four neighborhoods and is the 35th largest community in the state. It was the eighth fastest growing community in the state between 1990 and 2000. The town motto is “All that is Arizona.” and it is approximately 25 minutes from downtown Phoenix and spans into two zipcodes of 85268and 85269. It is home to the Fountain Hills Fountain, which spouts water an amazing 562 feet in the air once per hour. The town is somewhat ethnically diverse and the two most commonly spoken languages are English and Spanish. The community has a mild desert climate and is located next to the McDowell Mountains, which are a chain of extinct volcanic mountains. The town has a council/manager form of government, is a master-planned community and works to preserve the natural beauty of the area.

The area was inhabited by the Hohokam tribes and later by cattle ranchers. However, little is known about the early history of the area until it became a part of the P-bar (Pemberton) Ranch which was established in the early 1900s. The ranch passed through a number of owners beginning in the 1930s. Robert McCulloch purchased the lands for the community of Fountain Hills in the 1960s and the community was established by McCulloch Properties in 1970 and development began, slowly at first and then picking up speed. The city is named after a towering man-made fountain, which is the fourth largest in the world. The fountain was purchased by Robert McCulloch in 1970. The town was incorporated at last in 1989.

Fountain Hills is a predominantly white-collar community with over 92% of the workforce holding white-collar positions. Also, over 12% of the local workforce work from home via options like telecommuting or home based businesses. In 2010, the community spanned 18.2 square miles of land area, had a population of 22,489,a population density of 1,275.7 residents per square mile and a per capita income of $47,441. By 2013, the population was 23,235, the estimated median household income was $71,409 and the estimated per capita income was $44,082. Also, the estimated median house or condo value was $347,150, the mean housing price on all units was $384,723 and the median gross rent was $1,093. The estimated population for 2014 was 23,573 showing a continued pattern of growth.

Public education in the town is provided by the Fountain Hills Unified School District. Local schools include Fountain Hills High School, Fountain Hills Middle School, Four Peaks Elementary, McDowell Mountain Elementary and others. The town hosts three annual events, the Fountain Hills Great Fair, Thunderbird Artists’ Fountain Hills Art & Wine Affair and a local art fair. The town’s Fountain Park is a beautiful 64 acre park that surrounds the famous fountain. Local landmark Mount McDowell is named after General Irvin McDowell. The mountain is composed of sandstone conglomerate and is sacred to local native tribes. Homes for sale range in size and style, but are predominantly middle class or higher in nature.
