Florence, Arizona, is a medium-sized city and the county seat of Pinal County, Arizona. It is the county seat and one of the oldest cities in the county. It has six neighborhoods and is the 31st largest community in the state. Florence extends into three zip codes, 85132, 85128 and 85179. The city is regarded as a National Historic District and has more than 25 structures on the National Register of Historic Places. The city has a mixed workforce, no public transportation and low crime rates. The city has a hot desert climate that is typical in the lowland portions of the state. The city is somewhat ethnically diverse and over 22% of its inhabitants were born outside the United States. The area that would develop into the city of Florence was first inhabited by the Athabascans who were the ancestors of the San Carlos Apache Tribe. The area remained a part of Mexico until the Gadsden Purchase of 1853. The town of Florence was founded in 1886 and is the sixth oldest European settlement in the state. Levi Ruggles, a civil war veteran is credited with founding the community. Florence became the county seat of newly established Pinal County in 1875. In the same year, silver was discovered in a nearby mountain and the Silver King Mine was opened to mine it. A famous gunfight occurred in the town in 1888 between Joseph Phy and Pete Gabriel. Though both men were wounded, Phy died hours later and Gabriel survived for a number of years. Just outside Florence, during WWII there was a large POW camp that housed German and Italian prisoners. Today it is a thriving city with a rich history. The city spans 8.3 square miles of exclusively land area. In 2010, the population was 25,536, the population density was 2,054.6 inhabitants per square mile and the per capita income was $13,019. By 2013, the population was 25,428, the estimated median household income was $47,563 and the estimated per capita income was $13,330. In the same year, the estimated median house or condo value was $114,644 and the median gross rent was $723. The population estimate for 2014 puts the population at approximately 26,912. Public education in Florence is provided by the Florence Unified School District. Local schools include, but are not limited to Florence High School, Magma Ranch K8 School, Summit School and others. There are more than a dozen parks and recreation sites in the city including Central Bark Park, Heritage Park as well as the Florence Aquatic Center and many more. The city hosts events like Country Thunder, the largest country music festival in the southwest. The community also has a number of interesting cultural and historic sites like the St. Anthony’s Green Orthodox Monastery, the Pinal County Historical Society Museum, the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument, Preston Butte and many more.
