Chandler, Arizona is a large city in Maricopa County that consists of 63 neighborhoods and is the 4th largest community in the state. It is a suburb of Phoenix and is part of the Phoenix, Arizona Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is a predominantly white-collar community, with over 85% of the workers holding white-collar positions. Residents are known as Chandlerites and the city is quite diverse racially and ethnically. The city has public transportation in the form of light rail and rapid bus transit.
In 1891, veterinary surgeon Dr. Alexander Chandler settled on a ranch in the area and began studying irritation engineering. By 1900, he owned 18000 acres and began planning a town, which he wanted to name Chandler Ranch. Agriculture was the main industry in the area and initially the primary crops were cotton, corn and alfalfa. However, starting in the 1910s ostrich farming became a key industry. The birds were raised for their bright plumes which were popular on women’s hats. In 1912, Chandler High School was established and the town-site office was opened. In 1913 the first golf resort in the state opened in Chandler. The growing community weathered the Great Depression, but was hard hit a few years later by the cotton crash of 1920. By 1950, the population had risen to 3,800 and its founder passed away, but not before his vision had been made reality. In May of 1954 Chandler officially shifted from town status to that of a city.
The city spans 58 square miles and in 2010 the population was 236,123, the population density was 4,202.2 inhabitants per square mile. Also, in 2010, the median household income was $70,456, the median family income was $81,720 and per capita income was $23,904. By 2013, the population had risen to 249,146, the estimated median household income was $71,545, the estimated per capita income was $31,602. In the same year, the estimated median house or condo value was $233,000, the mean price on all housing units was $251,423 and the median gross rent was $1,111. The latest population estimate from 2014 was 254,276.
There are several historic properties and sites in Chandler like the MCCullough-Price House as well several historic homes, buildings and equipment located at the Tumbleweed Ranch like the McCrosky house and the Edwards House. Other sites of interest in the city are the Chandler Center of the Arts, the Zelma Basha Salmeri Gallery of Western American and American Indian Art. There are more than 60 parks in the city like Tumbleweed Park, Arrowhead Meadows Park and others. Annual events in Chandler include the Ostrich Festival, Fourth of July Fireworks, Day of Play and more.
